Spectacular Spiced Maple Cream Sauce

post featured image

Vegan chef Tess Challis has done it again. Tess continually whips up deliciousness using whole food ingredients that you might never expect to come together. For instance, can you guess what the base of this vegan cream sauce is? Surprise—it’s tofu!

Before you abandon this page with a big “eeew,” give it a minute. This is definitely one of those “don’t knock it ’till you try it” situations. Silken tofu is a type of tofu that is super soft and can be blended up to make creamy dressings and desserts like puddings, pies, mousses, and beyond. Silken tofu has little-to-no flavor but lots of creaminess, so it’s really a perfect base for sweet desserts. Plus, it’s low-calorie, protein-packed, and filled with health benefits! This vegan cream sauce is just one more extension of this magical bean curd’s array of capabilities.

So…are you ready to see how to make this vegan cream delight? Enjoy the recipe below!

The Terrific Wonders of Tofu

While some may cringe at the mention of the word tofu, this magical ingredient offers so much in the way of texture and is often a key ingredient in the making of vegan desserts. This recipe calls for silken tofu, which is a softer type of tofu that is great for using in smoothies and whipping into creamy concoctions, just like this vegan cream. If you’re curious about using tofu but aren’t sure where exactly to start, then check out our Tofu Guide for the Tentative Cook for tips on all things tofu!

Here is a quick run-down of some of tofu’s many advantages:

  • Many Minerals – Tofu not only contains all of the essential amino acids but it also contains minerals such as manganese, calcium, selenium, phosphorus, and copper along with iron and zinc.
  • Plenty of Protein – Tofu is one of the best ways to pack in your protein! Just 3.5 ounces has 8 grams of it.
  • Very Versatile – Tofu takes on the flavor of whatever you decide to season it with. Want to whip up a delicious vegan chocolate pudding but worry about using tofu to make it thick? Fear not! You’ll find yourself dreaming non-stop about creamy, dreamy tofu-based desserts once you try it!

How to Serve Up Your Vegan Cream Sauce

This spiced maple cream sauce can be drizzled atop waffles or pancakes on a Sunday morning with a sprinkle of vegan chocolate chips and some sliced fruit. It can be served as a dip with fresh strawberries. It can be swiped onto a plate below a piece of cake or pie for an extra gourmet touch. You get it…it’s extremely versatile!

It pairs perfectly with this caramelized banana recipe, also by Tess Challis (pictured below).

Storing Your Spiced Maple Tofu Cream Sauce

This sauce will last up to one week in the refrigerator. You could technically freeze it but it may affect the texture! If you truly insist on sticking it in the freezer, we’d recommend pouring the sauce into a freezer-safe bag, laid flat for easier defrosting.
