]]>Finger food is always your best bet when it comes to party starters. Forget the forks and fall in love with this catch!
Just eight ingredients, not counting water, stand between you and snacking satisfaction. Here are the essentials you need to stock up on:
Vegan ground meat: One of the most popular meat alternatives on the market, there’s no end to vegan options for ground beef! Use any brand you prefer, fresh or frozen and thawed, or make your own from TVP, crumbled tempeh, seitan, lentils, and/or nuts.
Onion: Start by sautéing an onion and your kitchen will instantly smell amazing. Yellow is fine here, but you can use white or red, or switch things up with shallots or leeks for a change of pace.
Garlic: There’s no thing as too much garlic. Consider the two cloves listed here as a starting suggestion; add to taste.
Green peas: For a pop of color and vegetable infusion, frozen peas are the perfect mix-in. Kids won’t even know they’re eating their veggies hidden inside these vegan super bowl snacks!
Puff pastry: The real star of the show, frozen puff pastry takes all the hassle out of prep work. Read on to learn more about this essential staple.
Flour: Regular all-purpose will do the trick here unless you need a gluten-free option. You can use white rice flour or potato starch in that case, since it only takes a small amount to prevent the pastry from getting too sticky.
Coconut oil: Add richness and shine with just a little dab! You could substitute melted vegan butter or simply olive oil if you’d prefer.
Traditionally, puff pastry is a type of laminated dough, made with many thin layers of butter. This is still true for some high-end bakeries and gourmet grocers, but many more storebought options are now “accidentally” vegan! Always read labels to verify, since formulas are liable to change at any time.
Availability will vary depending on your location and the season, since some view puff pastry as a holiday item only. Here are the best vegan choices found in the US:
Most mainstream grocery stores should have at least one option readily available in the freezer section, while more specialized varieties and brands can be purchased online. When in doubt, start your hunt here:
Here’s the rundown on how to make these vegan game day puff pastry footballs!
Step 1: Prepare the vegan ground meat according to the package instructions. In a sauté pan, heat oil, sauté onion and garlic until translucent, then add frozen peas and cook until warmed. Add the vegan ground meat, cook for 4 minutes, remove from heat, and set aside.
Step 2: Sprinkle flour over a flat surface, and using a rolling pin, roll puff pastry sheets until they are twice their original size. Cut out football shapes of uniform size and place half on a lined or greased baking sheet.
Step 3: Brush a thin layer of melted coconut oil along the edges of the dough on the baking sheet. Spoon taco meat onto the center of each pastry piece, leaving a 1/2-inch border for sealing.
Step 4: Cut lace marks into the remaining football-shaped pastry pieces (these will be the tops). Place them atop the bottom dough, covering the plant-based meat filling, and seal tightly using a fork to crimp the edges together. Brush the tops with coconut oil and bake for 20 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and enjoy as soon as they cool!
Puff pastry is the Swiss army knife of appetizers and desserts, savory and sweet. You don’t need any baking experience to transform it into impressive treats! If this is your first time working with it, here’s how to use puff pastry like a pro:
The real beauty of such a simple, foolproof formula is that it’s ideal for putting your own unique spin on. Here are a few winning ideas to pump up the flavor:
If it’s not game day, you can use any cookie cutter shape you like, not just footballs! In fact, you don’t need cookie cutters at all. You can simply cut squares with your knife or use a drinking glass as a template to make circles. For more festive ideas, consider:

]]>The post 50+ Vegan Snacks for Kids {Plant-Based} appeared first on World of Vegan.
]]>Growing kids especially need almost continuous access to stay full and focused, fueling a full day of work or play. It’s also a great opportunity to sneak more vitamins and nutrients into your picky eaters, simultaneous staving off the impulse to overeat at mealtimes. When energy levels run low, a quick bite can be a real lifesaver.
Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to navigate around the junk food out there, especially when cravings strike. There’s nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but things like chips and cookies should be the exception rather than the rule.
Avoid the pitfalls of processed foods, get out of your snacking rut, and rediscover the fun of healthy snacking all over again. Just a little bit of planning can take the stress out of that midday break.
The best snacks for kids will always be fresh, whole foods. Sugar, fat, and salt are non-issues when you’re serving up the basics, like cut apples and baby carrots. That doesn’t mean it needs to be boring, though! Get everyone on board by dressing up fruits and veggies with sauces and dips, playful presentations, and crave-worthy flavors. Try fun lunchboxes to make snacking more fun!
Here are a few healthy snacks you can whip up anytime, no recipes required.
Great snacks shouldn’t take a lot of time, effort, or money. Here are some delicious ideas that anyone can make!
If you’re struggling to get your kid to eat their greens, whip up a batch of these green blender muffins! You can call them “Monster Muffins” or “Dino Muffins” to make them extra-fun. These are great for toddlers, growing kids, and even babies trying Baby Led Weaning. You can make a batch and freeze them and pull them out for a secretly healthy quick breakfast, snack, or lunchbox addition.
These tofu snacks are encrusted with nutritional yeast, known by some as vegan catnip. You might not normally think of bean curd as prime snacking material, but these buttery, cheese little cubes are an excellent high-protein alternative to plain popcorn. Especially when you want something more substantial between meals, this is the recipe to eat on repeat.
These easy vegan bagel bites take the universally beloved flavors of cheese pizza and transform it into an almost instant treat. They’re ready in minutes, freezer-friendly, and great for packed lunches too.
These roasted chickpeas are insanely addictive and stunningly healthy! All you need are beans and a handful of spices to create a crunchy savory sensation.
If your kiddo loves french fries, try making them a bit healthier by using sweet potatoes! Sweet potatoes contain far more nutrition than white potatoes, and they arguably taste even better. These will never steer you wrong as a side, starter, or snack. They’re a snap when made in the air fryer, and much healthier than anything deep fried. Save the oil and load up on flavor instead.
These delicious nut and date balls taste like a cross between chocolate ganache and cookie dough. For something so impossibly decadent, it’s hard to believe they’re made with just nuts and dried fruits! Anyone with a sweet tooth will be draw to these chocolatey morsels; no one needs to know their wholesome secrets.
Packed with nutrition, chia pudding can be meal prepped in under 5 minutes and served up for snacks, breakfast, or even dessert. Layer it with fresh fruit, vegan yogurt, or granola for extra excitement.
Delight your kids with these flavorful chewy nuggets made with quinoa! They’re surprisingly easy to make and loaded with healthy whole foods—a far better option than traditional chicken nuggets.
These pizza spirals are a nostalgic favorite for anyone who grew up in the 90s, and now kids can enjoy them today, without all the processed ingredients! It only takes four simple ingredients to get some gooey pizza goodness on the table. The recipe is positively foolproof.
Khichdi has long been a staple for vegan and vegetarian kids in India, made from easily digestible whole grains and legumes. Traditionally a simple, warming stew, it can also be rolled into balls that are easier for toddlers to pick up and feed themselves. The whole family can enjoy this one as a main dish, too.
This easy-to-make broccoli isn’t just a side dish; it’s also a great snack for kids! A touch of garlic goes a long way in transforming those green florets into prime snacking material. It may sound like a stretch, but veggie-lovers will gobble them right up!
These vegan pumpkin muffins aren’t just for fall. Everyone will be drawn to the gooey chocolate chips strewn throughout that tender crumb, all while loading up on healthy pumpkin puree and unsweetened applesauce in every bite.
Smoothies are the best answer to a kid having a meltdown that claims they’re not hungry. Just a few sips of this refreshing blend will brighten their mood right away.
This recipe proves that potatoes don’t have the monopoly on this concept. Lightly breaded with a crunchy herbed crust, they’re so delicious that they don’t even need a dipping sauce. It’s hard to resist eating them right off the sheet!
Have you ever tried deviled potatoes? These are great for kids and adults, and will make you forget all about eggs. Naturally, there’s no cholesterol in these animal-free alternatives that have just as much rich flavor. They’re fancy enough to serve at a party but quick enough to enjoy anytime.
You’ve probably seen corn ribs on Instagram or TikTok. They’re a viral hit that’s as much fun to serve as it is to eat. It’s the same concept as corn on the cob, but the wedges take the distinct shape of ribs to create a whole new textural experience.
Swap the potato chips for kale chips! These cheesy kale chips will make kids crave vegetables like never before. It won’t be a struggle to put away a whole head of the leafy greens when they’re coated in a rich, cheesy mixture of blended sunflower seeds and nutritional yeast. You might want to double the batch because they’ll disappear in no time.
Snack bars are not always the healthiest option, but these portable, filling, tasty bars are a favorite among kids and the easiest dependable food source to toss in your bag when you’re running out the door.
When choosing snack bars for young children, there are fantastically healthy options made from dates, nuts, and fruit. And there are less health-optimal options made with refined sugar, oils, and chocolate. Kids will naturally prefer the later if offered both varieties, but if you only keep the healthier options at home, most kids love them.
Look for bars that are low in added sugars and high in fiber, as this helps maintain steady energy levels and supports digestion. Health-minded parents may also look for bars with simple ingredient lists, avoiding artificial additives and preservatives. For those seeking vegan options made without dairy or eggs, there are plenty of choices available.

Popular Snack Bars (Sweet)
Always check the label for any hidden animal-derived ingredients and allergen warnings, especially if your child has specific dietary restrictions or allergies.
Amara’s smoothie melts are one of our favorite packages snacks because they’re actually healthy, but they taste like candy so kids love them! My toddler is obsessed.
The ingredients are so clean and simple: organic fruit, organic coconut milk, and organic carrots. That’s it! They have all the flavor and nutrition of a refreshing fruit smoothie with none of the spills, smears, or splashes. And no added sugar!
Two of the flavors are vegan (mango carrot and carrot raspberry) and they are ideal for toddlers, older kids, and even the youngest ones just learning to self-feed. Parents, you can munch on them too — I do! They come in a resealable bag and won’t melt, so they’re very convenient to pack in lunches or toss in your bag and take on-the-go. You can even find them on Amazon.
Pssst! If your little one is just starting to explore solid foods, or you’re trying baby led weaning, these can also help babies practice their grip and improve hand-eye coordination.
Solely makes some of the best fruit chews—they are made with just fruit and Vitamin C, and totally delicious! These are lunchbox staples.
These adorable fruit rolls are widely accessible in the United States, made from just fruit, and they come with a fun collectable cards with animal facts on them! These are also great to pack in school lunches.
Leave it to Trader Joe’s to find a new spin on healthy fruit snacks, making them even more fun for kids! These organic peel-off “buttons” are flat round fruit leather pieces that kids can pull off of a thin piece of paper in the package.
Almost every grocery store and big box store carries fruit leather, and the ingredients just keep getting better! The colorful organic fruit leather pictured below is from Target, and these are one of the most budget-friendly options for fun fruity kids snacks and treats.
A new kid on the block, The Froot Thief brand is poised to become one of the most popular, spinning fruit-based chews into long playful strings that are each unbelievably nine feet long! These are not very widely available yet, but you can snag a case on Amazon to support them in these early days.
Dry cereal can be a great finger food, especially on long car trips or days outside since it doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Pack single servings of your favorite vegan cereal in reusable pouches or zip top bags for grab-and-go convenience.
Granola has potential as well, like cereal, but can be more difficult to eat without utensils. Varieties with bigger clumps and clusters are best to prevent crumbs.
Cheese is can be a fun addition to kids lunchboxes or snack trays, especially since it comes in so many forms. These days you may be able to find vegan cheese sticks (from brands like Miyoko’s and Daiya), creamy spreadable wedges (like these from Good Planet Foods), and even a plant-based version of the iconic wax-wrapped Babybel wheel.
Plant-based yogurt now comes in ever flavor and color imaginable! You can even find vegan yogurt tubes (for all the Go-gurt lovers) and Forager Projects’s cashewmilk yogurt pouches ideal for lunchboxes, that are nearly identical to the conventional options.
Just keep in mind most yogurts are loaded with sugar, so even though they contain beneficial probiotics, they should probably fall into a “sweets and treats” category rather than an everyday snack.
Bamba is a beloved snack for kids and toddlers, especially popular in Israel. These peanut-flavored puffed snacks are not only delicious but also a source of essential nutrients. They are made primarily from peanuts and contain no artificial flavors or preservatives. Bamba is a fantastic choice for parents looking to introduce their children to nuts in a safe and enjoyable way, as it melts in the mouth and is easy for little ones to handle. It’s a satisfying and crunchy treat that can be a great addition to a well-balanced snack repertoire for kids.
Harvest Snaps Baked Pea Crisps are an excellent option for health-conscious parents seeking a tasty and wholesome snack for their kids. Made from green peas, these crisps are not only vegan but also rich in plant-based protein and fiber. They have a satisfying crunch that kids love and they’re a great way to sneak some extra veggies into your child’s diet while keeping snack time enjoyable.
Chickpea puffs are another popular chip alternative for kids. The brand Hippies popularized this gluten-free and vegan snack that’s also a good source of plant-based protein and fiber. They come in fun flavors, including a vegan cheese flavor!
Freeze-dried vegetables seem like a questionable choice for young kids, but they’re surprisingly delicious, even if your little ones turn up their noses at the veggies on their plates! The drying process concentrates their natural sweetness, so single-ingredient crisps that are just corn, tomatoes, or peas take on greater depth of flavor.
Veggie straws or chips taste more like potato chips that everyone knows and loves but add a little bit more nutrition into the picture. They’re a good way to wean kids off less healthy snacks while still satisfying with a similar experience.
Cauliflower puffs prove that cauliflower really can do anything it puts its mind to! Puffed snacks are traditionally made from corn, but these use everyone’s favorite cruciferous vegetable as the base instead, coating them with dairy-free cheesy powder for that perfect savory finish.
You can also make your own chips like these zero-waste crispy potato skin chips and these kale chips!
Many thanks to Amara Organic Foods for supporting this article, and for making amazing healthy snacks for kids! Many of their products are vegan and we encourage you to explore for your own kids.

]]>Between busy schedules, grab-and-go meals, and picky eaters, it’s a good idea to fill the gaps with a daily supplement or two. Vegans especially need to keep tabs on certain things that are harder to come across naturally on a plant-based diet, but everyone can benefit from a bit of nutritional assistance.
In the vast array of tablets, gummies, sprays, and liquids, what are the best bets for optimal health? More importantly, what would make one of these options unsuitable for cruelty-free consumers? Let’s take a closer look at the fine print!
While the active ingredients in most vitamins and supplements are synthesized in labs or purely plant-based, the trouble comes with the medium in which it’s packaged.
There are many other questionable components, such as Carotene, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A, fatty acids, and more that can sometimes come from an animal source. Remove any doubt or worry from your RDA by simply seeking out companies that are transparent about their ingredients and clearly state their commitment to vegan values.
There are several essential vitamins and nutrients that are essential for all humans to get, but some are particularly necessary for vegan and vegetarian eaters to pay attention to. These include:
Everybody is different, so no single choice will be the best one for everyone. Thankfully, there’s a wealth of options on the market these days to accommodate everyone’s needs, cruelty-free.

]]>The best part about this hot cocoa mix? You just need four ingredients:
That’s it! You can store it in a 16 ounce mason jar or any sealed container and it will last all season long.
When you’re ready to make a steaming mug of this vegan hot cocoa mix, it only takes a few minutes to prepare! Simply heat some dairy-free milk up either in a microwave-safe mug or bowl in the microwave, or warm it up on the stove.
Stir in 3½ tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix for every one cup of milk. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
While the mixture does include mini vegan chocolate chips, it’s always fun (and delicious) to add some toppings! Here are some of my favorites:
If you want to have even more fun, create your own little at-home vegan hot cocoa station! Get some vegan marshmallows and drop them in a jar. If the holidays are near, neatly place some candy canes in a festive mug. Pop a little jar of vanilla extract or peppermint extract by your hot cocoa bar for a winter-inspired flavor boost. Set out your favorite hot cocoa sipping mugs, and honey, you’ve got yourself a vegan hot cocoa bar!
If you want to get really crazy (I always do!) you can even order a sparkly sign for your hot cocoa bar. Has your home ever been this ready for the holidays?
Looking for a delightful vegan Christmas gift, stocking stuffer, Hanukkah gift, housewarming gift, hostess gift, or just want to pamper someone you love? A mason jar filled with chocolatey goodness and TLC is a surefire hit.
Stick some vegan marshmallows on the top of the jar and Package it up with some fancy vanilla extract and peppermint extract and handwritten cocoa-making instructions for an extra-special surprise. Your friend, neighbor, co-worker or loved one will think of you every time they sip on vegan hot cocoa throughout the season!
If you like your hot chocolate ultra-creamy, opt for soy milk or oat milk. These both have a closer consistency to cow’s milk, making them the best alternative.
Siete Mexican Hot Chocolate, Starbucks Double Chocolate Hot Cocoa Mix, Swiss Miss Non-Dairy Chocolate Flavored Hot Cocoa Mix, Target’s Good & Gather Hot Cocoa Mix, Godiva Dark Chocolate Hot Cocoa, and Ghirardelli Double Dark Premium and Chocolate Mocha Hot Cocoa mixes are all vegan!
Most Swiss Miss hot chocolate powders are not vegan. However, they do offer one non-dairy option made with nonfat dried coconut milk.
No, Nestle does not currently offer a vegan or dairy-free hot chocolate pwoder.

]]>When the holidays roll around, the first thing that comes to mind is decorating…or maybe food. Either way, both food and decorations can transform a festive event into something even more magical and memorable. (Although this DIY clay recipe is technically edible, we don’t recommend giving it a try. The amount of salt would be overwhelming!)
If you have kiddies at home who become bored easily (or if the weather is wonky), use this opportunity to create an at-home Art Camp for Kids! This is the perfect time for children (or adults!) to allow their creativity to flow freely. Spend the day mixing up the salt dough (a super sensory activity opportunity) and decorating with delight after the ornaments are done.
Let’s get started!
Creating your own homemade clay is easier than you think! Although this project may get a little messy, it’s totally worth it. These salt dough ornaments can be exquisite and elegant or super chill and cheezy. They can be cute and cuddly, classic or contemporary, and even silly or scary. There are no rules once the dough is ready.
Before you get started, here are few suggestions to keep the clutter in check:
This homemade clay recipe isn’t only for the winter holidays. There are endless ways in which you can personalize this dough to make ornaments of any shape, size, or color. Here is a small list of shape suggestions for every season or celebration. We’d love to hear your ideas, too! Make sure to add them to the comments below.
This is the most thrilling part! Use your brain power to come up with your best and most brilliant ideas. You can do it! These are only some suggestions for decorating. The ideas are infinite!
To double check whether the art supplies you’re using are vegan-friendly, make sure to consult our Vegan Art Supply Guide!
Helpful Hint: If you wish for your salt dough ornaments to last more than a year, consider spraying them with a clear acrylic sealer or painting on a layer or two of Mod Podge. Remember to let dry thoroughly before storing.
Why not add a little something special to your ornament before baking? Include several drops (or sprinkles) of a natural scent to the unbaked dough to boost these salt dough decorations up a notch. Here a few scent recipes to get you started:
Note: Make sure to mix in the scented oils, extracts, or spices well into the dough before cutting and baking. If the scent is not strong enough when done, you can always use a paintbrush to brush more onto the back of the salt dough ornament (in case of staining) and let dry.
Hanging an ornament (for any occasion) should be fun, not frustrating and fiddly. If you follow these tips, you’ll find yourself looking forward to this step every year. No need to worry!
Skimping on the string or using ratty, old ribbon won’t do, friends! If it looks worn out or is breaking apart, put it in the compost or leave out for the birds. Go for good stuff such as: kitchen cotton string, hemp twine, linen cord, satin ribbon, metal ornament hooks (not the flimsy kind), or even rubber bands.
When adding the hole to the unbaked ornament, make sure that the hole is not too close to the top. If it is, chances are that the hole may either close up or not be sturdy enough to hold the ornament’s weight once out of the oven. Place the hole at least ¼-½ inch down from the tippy top.
Choose between a tree (either natural, artificial or even a small, metal tabletop tree just for ornaments), a wooden, expandable hat rack, or simply anywhere in your home that can hold a little bit of weight. Other unique ideas include door knobs, chair arms, banana trees, chandeliers, mug rack, or even your rear view car mirror! Find that special place and make it a tradition to add it there every year.
Instead of arranging the ornaments individually on a tree, hook, or stand, you can tie or sew them onto a sturdy cord (like a cotton clothesline) or to a long length of seam binding (you can find it at any fabric store). Then, simply attach each end securely to the edges of a doorway, across a fireplace mantle or over a window curtain rod. Bunting makes everything more exciting!
Make your own homemade clay handprint at home! Swap out cookie cutters for fingers, hands, or paws! These can be such wonderful and thoughtful gifts for family members and friends, as well as to commemorate significant life events and occasions.
To create these lovely, personalized clay pieces, make the salt dough as usual. But, instead of cutting out small, individual shapes, roll out the dough into one large shape. Place on a sheet of parchment paper. Try to keep the dough to around ½” thickness. Clean and dry the selected hand, finger, thumb, or paw (or item) well. Press the chosen part into the dough so that there’s a definite depression, but not all the way to the bottom. Remove very gently.
Lift the parchment paper off of the counter and place onto a baking sheet. Bake as for the salt dough ornaments. You may choose not to flip the piece over in the middle of baking. If you feel nervous that your creation might crack or break, simply turn the baking sheet around 180 degrees and continue baking. It’s not completely necessary for it to be flipped onto the other side. When done, let cool as directed and decorate!
To make these easy homemade clay ornaments all you need are three simple ingredients: all-purpose flour, salt, and water! That’s it!
Step 1:
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F or the lowest temperature your oven will go to.
In a medium to large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, and water and mix thoroughly using a wooden spoon or your hands. Once a dough forms, keep kneading it for a few minutes, adding a sprinkle of flour as needed if the dough becomes too sticky.
Step 2:
Once the dough has a soft, mostly dry texture, allow it to rest in the bowl for 20-30 minutes.
Step 3:
When ready, sprinkle a little flour on the counter top or cutting board and roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness.
Step 4:
Press cookie cutters into the dough surface, spacing them in a way that allows you to use up as much space as possible. Carefully peel away excess dough and transfer the cut shapes to a parchment lined baking sheet. Continue cutting out ornaments (occasionally reforming dough and rolling it back out when you only have scraps left) and placing them on the baking sheet until all of the dough has been used up.
Step 5:
Use a straw or large wooden skewer to make a clearly defined hole near the top of the cut shapes.
This is also the time to use any stamps or embossing letters if you have them.
Step 6:
Place on a middle rack of the oven and bake for 30 minutes.
Using a spatula, carefully flip the ornaments over and bake for another 30 minutes or until the shapes feel firm. Depending on your oven, it may take more or less than 30 minutes. Keep checking every 5 minutes or so. Don’t let the ornaments become brown.
Step 7:
Take the baking sheet out of the oven and allow the ornaments to cool completely before removing from the tray.
Step 8:
Decorate any way you like (adding paint, glitter, accessories, etc.) and thread a piece of ribbon or string through the top hole of the ornament. Enjoy!
Good question! At higher temperatures, the dough seems to expand a little more easily. To prevent this from happening, use the lowest setting on your oven when baking your ornaments. Also, place them as far away from the heating element as possible. Usually, this means towards the bottom of the oven.
After baking your cut shapes for 30 minutes (at your oven’s lowest temperature), flip them gently and make sure to check them every 5 minutes or so. Some ovens cook more quickly than others.
As an alternative to baking your salt dough ornaments in the oven (or if you do not have an oven), you can allow your ornaments to air dry on parchment paper or wax paper in a place that has low humidity.
This may take from a few days to a week, but they will eventually dry and harden. Make sure to flip the ornaments once per day. If you have the extra time and space, this is a nice way to save on electricity as well.
Being creative can be hard work, so here is additional inspiration for both vegan art supplies and vegan kids’ snacks. Once you’re done filling their minds with amazing art, fill up their bellies with healthy, delicious vegan snacks. These Peanut Butter & Jelly Thumbprint Cookies are an art project and fun food in one recipe—give them a try!

]]>The post The Perfect Vegan Ice Cream Cake (Easy and Dairy-Free) appeared first on World of Vegan.
]]>The centerpiece to any great celebration is always cake. While all cakes are invited to my parties, absolutely nothing beats this vegan ice cream cake. Stacked up high with layers of creamy vegan ice cream and chopped nuts, tucked in a crust made from blended Oreos, and decorated with chocolate drizzle or frosting and with sprinkles, every slice is a riot of flavors, colors, and textures. Whether it’s summer or winter, every last bite will be gleefully gobbled up before a single drop can melt away.
It may sound like an impossible dream once you’ve gone vegan, but you’ll be thrilled to discover that’s not the case! Making your own ice cream cake without any dairy or eggs is surprisingly easy, if not downright fun. This recipe comes from The Vegan Friendly Cookbook by Michelle Cehn and Toni Okamoto. It’s a recipe passed down from Toni’s mother-in-law, Jolene Shapiro. Enjoy!
Vegan ice cream: I scream, you scream, we all scream for vegan ice cream! Whether it’s made from oats, soy, coconut, pea protein, or any combination, everything goes here. Just make sure that you picking up a full pint (16 ounces) and not a downsized container, since some manufacturers have started packaging a scant 14 ounces at a time to boost their bottom line.
Oreo-style cookies: Chocolate wafer cookies with a vanilla crème filling is the classic combination, but you have plenty of opportunities to add even more flavor to this layer! And yes, Oreos are vegan! You can also find other brands like Back to Nature. You’ll just blend these up with vegan butter in the food processor to create your delicious cake crust.
Vegan butter: Since vegan butter becomes solid at cold temperatures, it acts as a binder here for the crust, while preventing the cookie layer from getting too soggy.
Chopped peanuts: Go nuts! For a crunchy, salty contrast to the sweet and creamy ice cream, classic peanuts always satisfy. If you have a nut allergy, though, you can always swap them out for pepitas, sunflower seeds, or simply more sandwich cookies.
Melted chocolate: For aesthetics and flavor, you can’t top a generous drizzle of chocolate. This could be just straight up melted chocolate, chocolate ganache, homemade magic shell, or even chocolate syrup.
Chocolate and buttercream frosting: Don’t leave your creation naked; frosting is a fun and easy way to make it look amazing. If you don’t want to make your own, you could take a shortcut here with store-bought frosting too. Most flavors of Duncan Hines frosting are “accidentally” vegan, but always check labels to make sure.
Sprinkles: Add a dose of magic and happiness to your dairy-free ice cream cake by shaking on your favorite brand of vegan sprinkles! These days there are lots of colorful sprinkles, sparkly sprinkles, and all sorts of fun-shaped sprinkles that are made without the dreaded confectioners glaze (which isn’t vegan). Yay, sprinkles!
Not sure where to start, or simply overwhelmed by the endless possibilities? Here’s a cheat sheet for some of our favorite pairings.
If this is your first time making an ice cream cake, don’t sweat it! Here are some tips to party-perfect results.
Make your cake well in advance of your party so you can simply enjoy the festivities. Keep it in the pan to prevent any other items from bumping into it, cover with a layer of plastic wrap, and label clearly. It should keep in the freezer for up to 6 months.
When you’re ready to serve, transfer it to the fridge and let sit for 20 – 30 minutes before slicing so it’s not rock solid. Add any fresh fruits or final garnishes right before bringing it out to the table.
Return any uneaten pieces back to the freezer immediately so they don’t melt away!

]]>This almond milk and strawberry smoothie recipe couldn’t be easier to blend together using just a handful of ingredients you likely have in your freezer and pantry already. And it’s healthy, too! What are we waiting for? Let’s get blending!
Ever wonder why fruit smoothies are even better when you include plant milks and seeds? If you think about it, a simple smoothie can be a powerhouse of positive nutrition in a single glass.
Strawberries are the star of this smoothie show! Berries boost your vitamin C, fiber intake, and particularly polyphenols (known also as awesome antioxidants). You can use store bought frozen strawberries, or fresh strawberries that you freeze yourself! If you freeze the strawberries yourself, just make sure they are fully frozen before making this smoothie.
A smoothie staple! Bananas help create a sweet, rich, thick, creamy, milkshake-like consistency in any smoothie. They also have fantastic levels of fiber, potassium, and vitamin B6. This is the ingredient that makes your smoothie s-m-o-o-t-h.
The perfect bananas for smoothies are very ripe and spotty. The more you allow bananas to ripen, the sweeter they get!
Ground flax is a vegan pantry staple. It can be used as an egg replacer in baking recipes, and added to numerous recipes! We add flax to this smoothie as a healthy source of omega-3 fats which are critical for brain health. If you don’t have flaxmeal, you can simply leave it out!
Why add oats? Something magical happens when you mix rolled oats with soy milk. This plant-based milk mixture becomes extra creamy and even more delicious. The trick to this is that you do need a high-speed blender to make this happen. It’s totally worth it!
If you have a high-powered blender, you can add the oats raw and they will blend smooth. If you’re working with a lower power blender, add the milk and oats first, and allow them to rest in the blender for 15 minutes before adding your other ingredients and blending. This will soften the oats for easier blending and a creamier result!
As a whole grain, oats provide much needed soluble fiber (beta-glucan, the best kind!), B vitamins, and minerals.
Supercharged with vitamins and give your smoothie that lovely rich flavor with almond milk. This recipe calls for unsweetened almond milk, since the two ripe bananas bring plenty of sweetness to the smoothie already, but any type will work! If you don’t have almond milk on hand, you can use any variety of plant-based milk in this recipe.
Although smoothies are usually a solitary snack or single breakfast, you might be wanting to add a little something extra. Here are some suggestions for your Strawberries ‘n’ Cream Smoothie:
Always Okay to Add Berries – You can never go wrong by adding more berries to your breakfast. Sliced strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or even cherries bring some sweetness, fiber, and vitamin C when sprinkled over the surface of your smoothie.
Power Up With Protein Powder – If you need this mixture to keep you full for most of the morning, try adding a scoop of vegan protein powder—like these brands.
A Nod to Chopped Nuts – Experiment with texture by topping with a few candied walnuts or your favorite nuts. This will add healthy fat, fiber, and protein to your smoothie and make it into more of a meal.
Blend It Into a Bowl – Add a little less liquid and you’ll have the perfect creamy consistency for a smoothie bowl. Add some shredded coconut, a spoonful of chocolate hazelnut spread, and a few slices of fresh strawberries or banana. Beautiful!
Want Whipped Cream? No problem! If you have a can of coconut milk in your cupboard, you’re all set to go. You can use the spray cans from the grocery store, but homemade coconut whipped cream is just heavenly!
Smoothies are best consumed fresh within the first 15 minutes of blending, and we highly recommend adjusting the recipe to fit your appetite so no smoothie goes to waste.
If you need to save your almond milk strawberry smoothie leftovers, they can be saved in the fridge for in a covered container, but the texture and flavor will change. If you have an insulated water bottle or thermos, that would be even better for keeping your remaining smoothie cool and fresh in the fridge.
When you’re ready for the smoothie, a good idea is to blend your leftovers with a small handful of frozen fruit to get your smoothie thick and creamy again, especially if the consistency looks a little thin. Best to use the fruit already in your smoothie, but you can also branch out and try something new.

]]>From earthy greens and golden yellows to bright pinks, deep reds, and soft purples, we guarantee that you’ll be blown away by these creative culinary possibilities. It’s amazing how fun it can be if you allow nature to take center stage in the kitchen.
Are you ready to discover all the earth has to offer when it comes to rainbow colors? Keep reading!
Like many everyday kitchen staples, there are some that simply fly by our radar and are not vegan-friendly. Vegan food dye can be created from either natural or synthetic, animal-free ingredients. While synthetics are seemingly less expensive, it’s been found that large quantities can be harmful to our bodies. If you’re able to find dyes based on more natural, plant-based ingredients, all the better!
Common Non-Vegan Ingredients:
Living creatures are not only killed needlessly for the incidental dye that they produce but the finished products are usually tested on other animals, causing even more harm. Luckily, you don’t have to rely on animal-based dyes anymore. There are much better, more humane plant-based options!
We’re lucky that the current market for vegan food coloring has a variety of exceptional brands that cater to both your creative and culinary needs. Food coloring can vary in its vegan-friendliness, with some synthetic options containing animal-derived ingredients. Plant-based sources like fruits, vegetables, and spices are popular alternatives, ensuring vibrant and ethical hues for your dishes.
Here are some easy-to-find colors in your kitchen pantry:
Beets, nature’s vibrant pink gem, yield a rich and captivating pink or maroon hue that adds an exciting pop of color to your dishes. Whether you’re aiming for a bold dessert or a colorful salad, beet juice or purée can be your go-to vegan food coloring option. Incorporate it into frosting for cakes, salad dressings, smoothies, or even pasta dough for an enticing and natural touch of vibrancy.
Example: the pink frosting on this vegan birthday cake made by blending beet powder into vanilla (white) frosting.
Elevate your culinary endeavors with matcha tea, offering a soft and serene green tone that can transform your recipes into edible works of art. Beyond its distinct flavor, matcha contributes a soothing green color to cakes, cookies, smoothies, and even savory dishes like noodles or sauces, ensuring a visually appealing and appetizing experience.
Our Matcha Buttercream Cupcakes are a perfect example!
Unveil the earthy beauty of spinach by utilizing its natural olive hue to invigorate your dishes. Blended spinach provides a subtle, muted green that pairs exceptionally well with savory creations such as pasta, dips, bread, and even dumplings. This vegan food coloring option not only enhances the color palette but also enriches your meals with an extra dose of nutrients.
Example: our secretly healthy Green Blender Muffins made with spinach!
Harness the captivating power of blue spirulina to infuse your creations with a mesmerizing azure hue. Sourced from nutrient-rich blue-green algae, blue spirulina offers a natural and vibrant color that elevates everything from smoothie bowls to baked goods. Its stunning blue shade adds a touch of aquatic enchantment to your dishes, making it a sought-after choice for those looking to create visually striking and healthful culinary masterpieces.
Whether you’re blending it into frostings, beverages, or homemade energy bars, blue spirulina promises not only a stunning color but also a nutritional boost that aligns perfectly with your wellness journey.
Infuse a radiant burst of sunshine into your recipes with the golden magic of turmeric. Renowned for its vibrant color and health benefits, turmeric can be used to create an inviting golden yellow shade in a variety of dishes.
Whether it’s curries, rice, sauces, tofu scramble, or even plant-based cheeses, turmeric adds a warm and cheerful touch while delighting your taste buds.
Derived from butterfly pea flowers, this powder produces a mesmerizing blue color that can shift to purple with changes in pH. It’s commonly used in beverages, desserts, and cocktails.
Unsweetened cocoa powder can be used to create deep brown shades in baked goods, desserts, and other dishes.
Transforming your culinary creations into shades of lilac is made simple with the delightful blueberry. These small but potent berries lend a gentle and inviting color to a variety of treats. From muffins and pancakes to yogurt and ice cream, blueberry juice or purée introduces a delicate lilac tint while infusing a burst of natural flavor.
Using superfood powders and herbs is definitely the key to the best natural food coloring. Brands that we love to use to enhance color include:
Remember, experimentation is key when using natural food colorings. Adjust the quantities to achieve your desired shades, and have fun exploring the endless possibilities of creating visually appealing and appetizing vegan dishes without relying on artificial dyes.
Besides creating fantastic food coloring formulations for baking or making super colorful smoothies, there are several other ways to use vegan food coloring. All of these can be entertaining for both adults and children alike. If you’re crafty, you may even come up with more interesting ideas!
Maybe. Wilton Brands claims that their food coloring is vegan, but the added glycerin is debatable. Their colors use glycerin from plants, animals, and petroleum, though it’s not clear which ones are which. If this isn’t a sticking point for you, then you can add it to the list to use.
Yes, their Decorating Gel Food Color is vegan-friendly.
Although homemade food coloring from natural foods or powders may expire within 2 weeks (even with refrigeration), commercially made food coloring usually does not expire. If stored correctly, it can last indefinitely. The worst that seems to happen is that the dye dries out, especially if it’s a gel formula. Otherwise, as long as it doesn’t have a foul odor, it’s safe to use.
There are no animal-derived ingredients in red 40, but artificial colors like this are almost always tested on animals. Though this chemical color is technically vegan, it’s up to you whether or not you feel comfortable using it.
As you dive into the world of vegan food coloring, don’t just add color—add a splash of your own personality to every dish! So go ahead, let your inner artist roam free in the kitchen, and paint your plates with the joyful shades of nature, creating not just meals but edible expressions of your values and tastes.

]]>The post Vegan Tapioca Pudding (Dairy-Free) appeared first on World of Vegan.
]]>Savoring spoonfuls of sweet vegan pudding sounds like the perfect way to spend a self-care day. Grab your best bowl, find your favorite book (or movie), and give your belly the best dessert its had in months! Add a few pieces of fresh fruit on top and you may find that most of your cares just melt away.
For those of you who have never heard of (or tried) this interesting ingredient in all of your life, let me give you the 411 on tapioca:
Tapioca comes in several forms, including:
In this recipe we use small pearl tapioca which can be found at many grocery stores and online.
If you’re a tapioca fan, you’ll be pleased to hear that it is 100% vegan. Derived from the starch of the cassava root and processed without the use of any animal products makes this ingredient completely vegan! It can thicken and have similar consistency to gelatin, but does not contain any gelatin, dairy, or eggs!
Keep in mind that tapioca itself is vegan, but it may be added to non-vegan foods such as pudding made with egg and dairy products or bubble tea made with milk. Check the ingredient label to be sure, or make your own vegan tapioca pudding (recipe below) and boba tea to play it safe!
This recipe calls for small pearl tapioca (like this), which are small, perfectly round hard balls made of uncooked tapioca. When you cook these, they absorb liquid and flavor and turn into chewy gelatinous balls that make up a delicious pudding.
Note that the size of the tapioca pearls will determine the cooking time. If you use a size other than small pearl tapioca you may need to adjust the cooking time (follow the package instructions).
We add a cup and a half of plant-based milk to this recipe. Any dairy free milk will work! Almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, flaxseed milk, and beyond. It can be sweetened or unsweetened, vanilla or plain. Those slight differences in flavor won’t significantly impact the pudding in the end, since we are also adding sugar and vanilla extract.
The coconut milk is key in this recipe, and it’s important to get the full-fat kind! Avoid the low-fat labels. This creamy milk will create the thick creamy pudding when combined with the other ingredients. The tapioca pudding will have a slight coconut flavor, which we love!
Tapioca pudding has such a simple, neutral flavor that it’s easy to add all sorts of toppings and it will taste terrific. Be bold, be brave, and be daring in how you partake your pudding!
Bring on the Berries – Berries are the perfect tangy topping for your tapioca. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, or even cherries are a good choice. You might consider our Strawberry Rhubarb Compote, too.
Sprinkle With Some Cinnamon – Cinnamon sugar is a sensible option that adds extra sweetness and little bit of spice. Just mix ¼ cup of granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon (Vietnamese is lovely!) and you’ll have the most delightful dusting for your dessert.
Coconut Cream Is Always a Dream – You may have noticed that I add coconut whipped cream to almost every dessert. The simple reason is that I love it and I think its creamy, thick texture is just the thing to make any sweet course complete.
Tango With Mango – Mango makes a wonderful match with this particular pudding! After the tapioca has cooled a little, feel free to include any amount of chopped fresh (or defrosted frozen) mango. If you’re eating the pudding warm, I would add warm mango and cool mango for a cold pudding. For extra zest, squeeze a tiny bit of lime juice on top.
Always Choose Chocolate – If you’re a chocolate lover, you’re in luck! There’s no simpler way to make this pudding more pleasant than by adding dairy-free chocolate chips or chunks. For this recipe, stir in one cup of chips or chunks just before the pudding is done cooking. Make sure that you mix well.
If stored in a covered container in the fridge, this vegan tapioca pudding recipe should stay fresh for a couple of days. If you’d like the pudding to last a little longer, I would suggest spooning out several portions into separate containers (like ramekins) instead of keeping the pudding in a single serving. Make sure to cover with a small plate, plastic wrap, or cloth.
Tapioca is also one of the few puddings that you can freeze. The freezing process won’t affect the texture or flavor very much at all. Place in a covered freezer safe dish, silicone bag, or freezer bag. Seal tightly. It will last up to three months if stored correctly. Thaw in the refrigerator.
This Vegan Tapioca Pudding recipe was developed by Michelle Cehn. Vegan food photography by J.J Steele, and the article was written by Gina House and edited by Amanda Meth.

]]>Store-bought cakes can’t hold a candle to these boldly chocolate beauties, but they’re even easier to make than jumping in the car for a grocery run. Top them with your favorite buttercream frosting and you’ve got a foolproof hit on your hands.
Chocolate cupcakes should be an easy sell, but if you need further convincing, consider the following points that make this particular recipe worth your attention:
You’re never more than eight ingredients away from fresh, luscious, homemade vegan chocolate cupcakes—and that’s including salt and water! These are the basics to stock up on:
Flour: All-purpose flour really can do everything, from making hearty loaves of bread to soft cookies and cakes. Seek out unbleached flour, which hasn’t been chemically treated and retains a high protein content.
Sugar: Standard granulated white sugar is best for a clean, balanced sweetness without any aftertaste.
Cocoa: Natural, unsweetened cocoa powder, not Dutched cocoa powder is best for this recipe. Dutched cocoa has been alkalized to make it darker and give it a rounder chocolate flavor, but it won’t rise as well with acidic ingredients, so you may end up with flatter, denser cupcakes if you use it here.
Vegan butter: Spring for the good stuff and make it count! The right vegan butter can make or break a dessert and with so few ingredients to hide behind, you can really taste it in this recipe. Look for one with a blend of vegetable oils in it which helps recreate a similar butter texture.
Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is the not-so-secret ingredient that creates an airy rise and more flavorful baked goods overall. You won’t taste the overt twang of vinegar since it’s such a small, but important, addition.
Step One: Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F and line a cupcake pan with 12 cupcake liners and set it aside.
Step Two: In a large mixing bowl, sift in the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Step Three: In a small, microwave-safe bowl, gently melt the butter until just melted. Don’t let it get hot. Then, stir in the apple cider vinegar and vanilla extract.
Step Four: Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the melted vegan butter mixture, then pour the room temperature water over top.
Step Five: Using a spatula, gently fold the ingredients together until just combined and the batter looks slightly bubbly. Use a whisk to work out any clumps if needed.
Step Six: Transfer the batter to the lined cupcake pan, distributing the batter evenly.
Step Seven: Bake the cupcakes on the center rack for 22-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean with no wet batter. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
Cupcakes are a great recipe to start baking with! You can’t fail with this simple formula, no experience required. For the best results every time, here are some quick tips to remember:
These vegan chocolate cupcakes store well at either room temperature or refrigerated for up to a few days. If you can get your hands on a handy cupcake storage container, this will help protect your little frosted beauties. Keep in an airtight container to preserve freshness.
If making cupcakes in advance, hold off frosting until the day of for best results.
Chocolate pairs beautifully with almost anything you can think of, from fruits to herbs and spices. Jazz up your next batch with a few fun, flavorful twists.
You sure can! Just use an equal amount of your favorite gluten-free all-purpose flour blend instead of regular all-purpose flour.
For a single layer, pour the batter into a lightly greased 8-inch round cake pan and bake for 30 – 38 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. For a two-layer cake, double the recipe and use two 8-inch round pans instead. You may need to double your frosting recipe to have enough to cover.
Divide the batter between 36 mini cupcake tins lined with papers or lightly greased and bake for 10 – 14 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and frost as desired.
Baked, cooled, but unfrosted cupcakes are excellent to freeze and save for later. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap, stash in an airtight container, and keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw at room temperature for at least 2 hours before serving.

]]>All you need are your favorite vegan haunted hot dogs and vegan magical meatballs and a creepy package of the Original Pillsbury Crescent Rolls. Yup, the Original Crescent Rolls are accidentally vegan! Watch the video below to see how they’re made.
While you can certainly plop these right onto a plate, we love going the extra mile to create something magical. With just a few simple ingredients or household items, you can make these snacks into the most enchanted edibles ever!
Coffin It Up – Make a creepy chocolate coffin using a silicone mold and cut your hot dogs to size before wrapping in the crescent roll dough. When the devilish dogs are done (and cooled), you can add the mummy to the coffin right before serving. Dinner and dessert in one!
Graveyard Grab n’ Go – Find an old wooden tray or cutting board (preferably one with sides) and cover with a layer of dark cookie crumbs (Oreos are accidentally vegan!). Create tombstone-shaped cookies using our delicious cookie recipe and add a thin layer of gray frosting (mixing black and white together) on all sides. Lay your mummy balls and dogs in front of the terrifying tombstones and cover with more cookie crumble. Then, it’s time to dig for a delicious (and possibly demonic) dinner.
Petrified Pumpkins on Parade – Find a few mini pumpkins and carve into cringe-worthy characters. Once cleaned out and spectacularly sinister, stand up the magnificent mummy meatballs and dogs inside. Serve along with a small cauldron of ketchup.
Vegan Hotdogs or Vegan Meatballs—any brand will work! This veggie meatball recipe can create an even more homemade flair and can be batch cooked ahead of time.
Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls—this crescent roll dough is naturally vegan and easy to find!
Mustard or Ketchup—whichever you prefer. These are used for the eyes and pair perfectly with these mummy dogs for dipping too!
We’ve been making these mummy dogs and meatballs for nearly a decade now for Halloween parties because they’re such a simple and fun treat. They’re always a huge hit and one of the first things to be gobbled up. You can find crescent rolls at many mainstream grocery stores and you can use any vegan meatballs and veggie dogs you’d like!
1. Use the tip of your finger to press and pop open the crescent roll container. Lay out the dough onto a cutting board.
2. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into long, thin strips about ½-inch wide.
3. Wrap the strips in a mummy-like fashion (being as wiggly as you wish) around each of the vegan meatballs and hot dogs. Don’t forget to leave a little space on each to add the glowing red, ketchup eyes!
4. Place each onto a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 11-13 minutes, or until the mummies are all a ghostly golden brown.
5. When cooled a little, attach the decorating tip to the icing bag, pour in some ketchup, and make some eerie dots for eyes on each vegan meatball and hot dog.
Place on a spooky serving plate and use toothpicks to serve.
These mummy munchies are not only super easy to make, but require very little equipment. All you need is:
Sadly, this crescent dough has wheat as an ingredient and is not gluten-free. But, if you have your own gluten-free pasty dough recipe that you like to use, feel free to use that in this recipe. Keep in mind that the cooking time and temperature will be different.
There are a couple of ways in which you can reduce the fat in this recipe. If you’re worried about the saturated fat in the crescent roll dough, don’t hesitate to use whichever dough you prefer. You may wish to take a look at a few different brands of plant-based meatballs and hot dogs to find the one that has the lowest amount of fat. See below for more substitution ideas.
No problem! You can use anything you like in this recipe. Feel free to substitute your own recipe for plant-based meatballs (we have a recipe for quinoa meatballs) or use vegetables instead. Long vegetables that would work well would be asparagus, carrots, or potato spears. Round foods that could be swapped instead of meatballs would be brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflowers, or even tater tots!
We hope you enjoy this vegan Halloween recipe by Michelle Cehn and Toni Okamoto! You can watch more of our videos here—and don’t miss our vegan Halloween candy guide!
